The Upholstery Process

The Russell Upholstery Process

On a daily basis, we come into contact with various forms of upholstery, whether it's on our sofas, chairs, or other pieces of furniture. However it's interesting to note that we seldom take time to reflect on the intricate process that is required to restore or reupholster these items. This often overlooked journey involves a series of steps and craftsmanship that bring new life to our beloved furniture. Upholstery is a very time consuming process, for both the customer and our employees, lets take a look at the process.

1.

Choose a Piece of Furniture

Choosing the right furniture to upholster is crucial, even if it seems obvious. Are you in search of a standout item? Will it be used on a daily basis? Is this piece well-constructed and worth preserving or restoring? These are just a few questions to consider.

3.

Consider Decorative Options

Decorative elements can elevate the appearance of your item. Options like decorative nails, nail spacing, welt cord (or piping), decorative gimp, rope, and fringe are just a few of the choices you can explore.

Decide on New Foam / Webbing

Once you've selected a fabric and decorative options, there's an essential, albeit less enjoyable, step to take: assessing whether your current padding or foam is adequate or if you wish to add more. While this may increase material costs, it's a crucial factor to consider.

Design Changes

Now is the moment to determine if your piece meets your expectations or if you'd like make some adjustments. Perhaps you want a larger cushion, or you might consider adding or removing buttons or skirts to achieve a more modern or traditional appearance.

Strip Your Furniture

Once your fabric and furniture is inhouse the process takes about 2-4 weeks for completion.

At this step we carefully remove hundreds or even thousands of staples from your item, by hand, revealing the underlying padding and frame. If we are using your existing foam and padding, your furniture will be sprayed and disinfected in compliance with Pennsylvania state law.
